Self Harming, Cutting & Self Esteem Program for Adolescents
About this program
The Self harm, Cutting and Self-esteem program works with adolescents and teenagers to explore and understand what is behind their self harming behaviour. The program includes a combination of psycho-education, practical skill teaching (such as alternative behaviours to self-harm) and experiential components that encourage adolescents to reflect and become aware of their feelings and thought processes. This program offers support for teenagers to talk about their struggles and difficulties in a safe environment, whilst also incorporating new ways to express oneself.
Who this program is designed for
The program was designed for adolescents and teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 who currently use self harm and/or cutting behaviours as a means to cope. This program is for adolescents who are willing to reflect on their current experience and who are interested in learning different tools to cope with the difficulties they are experiencing.
How this program works
The program will run over eight consecutive weeks, with each session lasting 90 minutes.
Sessions will take place in small group settings (maximum 8 people) in a warm and welcoming environment.
The program will introduce a new topic each week, with relevant experiential activities for the participants, and will also include a significant portion of each session for open discussion among the group.
Topics that will be introduced include:
- What are self harming behaviours
- Understanding the different reasons why you self harm
- The impact that peers who self harm have on you
- Why self harming is harmful and dangerous to oneself
- Increasing awareness about one's thoughts and beliefs and how they relate to self harming behaviours
- Increase your capacity for emotional regulation
- Identifying healthy ways to express your emotions
Participants will be able to explore their thought processes, behaviours and feelings and the role self harming behaviours currently has for them. They will also learn different ways to express themselves to decrease causing physical and emotional harm to themselves.
